Standard Sizing
Residential gutters come in two main sizes: 5-inch and 6-inch (measured across the top opening). The standard K-style profile is used for most homes. Downspouts are typically 2x3 inches for 5-inch gutters and 3x4 inches for 6-inch systems.
When 5-Inch Works
For most standard residential homes with normal roof areas and typical pitch, 5-inch gutters handle East Tennessee rainfall adequately. This is the most common size installed and works well for the majority of homes.
When to Go Bigger
Larger homes with more roof area, steep roof pitches that accelerate water flow, areas where multiple roof planes converge into a single gutter run, and homes in higher-rainfall mountain areas may all benefit from 6-inch gutters.
6-inch gutters handle about 40% more water volume than 5-inch. For homes that need the extra capacity, the cost difference is modest compared to the performance improvement.
Eli's Approach
Eli evaluates each home individually, considering roof area, pitch, local rainfall data, and the number of downspout locations. He'll recommend the right size for your specific situation — not a one-size-fits-all answer.
