Why Downspout Placement Matters

The Forgotten Part of Gutter Systems

Most homeowners focus on the gutters themselves and forget about where the water goes after it exits the downspouts. But if your downspouts dump water right next to your foundation, your gutters are working against you — they're concentrating all your roof water into a few spots right at your home's base.

Minimum Distance

As a general rule, downspouts should direct water at least 4-6 feet away from your foundation. For homes with basement moisture issues, longer distances may be needed. The goal is to get water far enough away that it can't migrate back to the foundation through the soil.

Routing Options

Simple extensions: The most basic and affordable option. Aluminum or flexible extensions attach to the downspout outlet and direct water a few feet away. Good for many situations, but can be a tripping hazard and require re-positioning after mowing.

Underground drain lines: Buried PVC pipes carry water from the downspout to a discharge point well away from the home. Cleaner looking, more effective, and permanent. This is the gold standard for homes with drainage concerns.

French drains and dry wells: For more complex situations, water can be directed to a dry well (underground gravel pit that allows slow percolation) or a French drain system.
